Toothaches are characterized by pain in or around a tooth. Minor aches from temporary gum irritation can be treated at home, but more severe toothaches are caused by issues only a dentist can effectively treat — and should be addressed as soon as possible.
Common causes
- Tooth decay and cavities
- An abscessed tooth (bacterial infection in the pulp)
- A tooth fracture
- Grinding or repetitive motions that wear enamel
- Tooth eruption
- Infected gums (periodontitis)
Easing pain at home
- Rinse with warm salt water
- Rinse with diluted 3% hydrogen peroxide
- Over-the-counter pain relievers
- A cold compress for 20-minute periods
When to see the dentist
If sharp or constant pain, fever, a bad odor, or foul-tasting drainage persist for more than a couple of days, call us. We’ll review your history, take an X-ray, and build a treatment plan — from a filling to a root canal or antibiotics, depending on the cause.
