Surgical Instructions

Preparing well and following your recovery instructions helps your surgery go smoothly. Please read the guidance below and follow any personalized directions from your dentist, which always take priority.

Before your surgery

• Tell us about all medications and supplements you take, and any changes to your health.
• If you will be sedated, arrange for an adult to drive you to and from your appointment.
• Follow any fasting instructions we provide for sedation.
• Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing and eat a light meal beforehand unless told otherwise.
• Fill any prescriptions ahead of time so they are ready when you get home.

Controlling bleeding

• Bite firmly on the gauze placed over the surgical site for 30–45 minutes.
• Some oozing is normal for the first day; replace gauze as needed with gentle pressure.
• Avoid rinsing, spitting, and straws for the first 24 hours to protect the clot.

Managing swelling

• Apply a cold compress to your cheek, 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off, for the first day.
• Keep your head elevated, including while sleeping the first night.
• Swelling often peaks two to three days after surgery, then eases.

Diet

• Stick to cool, soft foods such as yogurt, smoothies, and lukewarm soup at first.
• Stay hydrated with water, but avoid straws, alcohol, and very hot drinks.
• Return to your normal diet gradually as comfort allows.

Activity

• Rest for the remainder of the day and avoid strenuous activity for a few days.
• Do not smoke, which significantly slows healing.

Medications

• Take all prescribed medications and antibiotics exactly as directed.
• Use pain relief as recommended, starting before the numbness fully wears off.
• Call us before stopping any medication or if you notice a reaction.
